UFC 129: Lyoto Machida Knocks Out Randy Couture in Spectacular Fashion

by Michael David SmithMachida beats Randy Couture at UFC 129.In one of the most spectacular knockouts in mixed martial arts history Lyoto Machida used a brilliant kick to knock out Randy Couture at UFC 129 -- and perhaps end Couture's career.

Machida's jumping front kick was reminiscent of the kick that Machida's friend and training partner Anderson Silva used to defeat Vitor Belfort in February. Like Silva, Machida credited the action star Steven Seagal for teaching them the kick.

"I feel very good because I trained it a lot, this kick," Machida said after the fight. "My dad taught me, Mr. Steven Seagal taught me also."

UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen's NSAC licensing hearing delayed to mid-May

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Chael_Sonnen_180_10.jpg
Chael Sonnen has once again found himself delayed in getting everything taken care of in order to make his return to the cage, as MMAJunkie.com reports that his licensing hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission has been pushed back from April 27 to mid-May.

Per the report the delay comes as Sonnen's probation officer won't clear him to enter Clark County next week due to the Laughlin River Run motorcycle rally. There is apparently a mandate in place to keep convicted felons out of the county during the rally after rampant violence at past versions of the annual rally, namely the 2002 rally that saw a brawl break out between rival motorcycle gangs The Mongols and Hells Angels. That brawl left three bikers dead and led to this "preemptive step" against any felons entering the county during subsequent rallys.

Sonnen will be appearing in front of the commission in an attempt to get himself re-licensed in the state both to fight and to corner other fighters. Sonnen admitted to using testosterone for what he claims is a diagnosed condition of hypogonadism for his fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 117, and at his suspension appeal with the California State Athletic Commission in December, Sonnen stated he had been on the treatment prior to his UFC 109 fight with Nate Marquardt in Nevada, and that he had gotten approval from NSAC executive director Keith Kizer for the treatment.

He has since admitted that no such conversations took place, though he falls back on saying his manager spoke with Kizer and he claims he took his managers advice. Due to those statements, his TRT and more, there's no guarantee he will be licensed by the state of Nevada. However, he will have a chance to answer the commission's questions and they will then determine by a majority vote whether or not they will license him to fight and to corner others.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This circus is delayed a few weeks longer for Sonnen. This hearing with the NSAC is going to be interesting, and could turn into a similar mess as the one he had with the CSAC in December. Still, moving it to mid-May would still allow the UFC to tap him as one of the coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 14 if that's the route they want to take, as the season won't begin filming until June. I think signs are still pointing to that unfortunately being the case, but we'll find out what the NSAC rules at that meeting next month before the next step can be determined.

HYDEN BLOG: Nick Diaz's next opponent and Royce Gracie's MMA Legend challenge

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch contributor

Staff08Hyden_Main_46.jpg
Nick Diaz recently said in an interview that he wants to move to boxing and he doesn't see a future for himself in MMA. He also talked about not having anyone in Strikeforce for him to fight, that he's above anyone else in the company. The question I would have for Diaz is why then did he sign a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce mere months ago? If he truly felt this way, why wouldn't he go someplace else? The answer is that this is obviously a ploy to try to up his value to the UFC.

Nick Diaz could have some success in boxing. He wouldn't have nearly the success that he enjoys in MMA, though. Perhaps he craves a new challenge, though. One of the reasons Diaz gave for not seeing a future for himself in MMA is money. Hell, I have no problem with that, who doesn't want more money? Everyone wants to get paid. The reality, though, is that Diaz will likely make more money fighting in MMA than he would in boxing. The main reason for that is that he'll be more successful in MMA than in boxing.

Right now the UFC has to deal with the headache Nick Diaz is creating by his comments and actions. To borrow a phrase from Woody Paige, I'm solutions-oriented and here's what I would do. The UFC should sign Nick Diaz to fight Georges St. Pierre, regardless of what happens in GSP's fight against Jake Shields.

If GSP beats Shields, you have a Welterweight Title unification bout. We all know this is where things are headed after Zuffa bought Strikeforce anyway, why not have it now? Even if GSP loses to Shields, I would still sign GSP vs. Diaz. GSP would need to earn his way to a title shot, and what better way to do that then to have him fight for the Strikeforce Welterweight Title? Can anyone name someone who deserves a shot at the Strikeforce Welterweight Title more?

I know this is dicey, as Diaz and Shields wouldn't fight each other, but I don't think it would even be an issue because I think that GSP can beat either one very handily.

Giving Nick Diaz a fight against GSP will placate Diaz because it would be the biggest fight of his career, both athletically and financially. It would also give GSP a new opponent to face, rather than a rematch against someone he's already dominated.

*************

The UFC is going to run an event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August. Royce Gracie has stated that he wishes to fight at this card. Art Jimmerson and Dan Severn have both publicly challenged Gracie to a fight at this card. If Gracie wants to fight another legend, that's cool. It'd be a nice throwback to his glory days, and it's a special occasion. If I had to choose an opponent from Jimmerson and Severn, I would definitely choose Severn. It's been a long time since Jimmerson fought while Severn just fought in February and is scheduled to fight two more times in the next few months.

I think a Severn vs. Gracie fight would be a good old school moment for the UFC. I'm for it, as long as it doesn't happen too often. It should be reserved for certain times and events, and only with fighters who are in shape to compete. Having two UFC legends collide would be a nice addition to a pay-per-view, though it should be the third fight in a triple main event card. It's nice to look back sometimes, but you also have to keep looking forward.

The worst part of UFC 129 for GSP and Shields? Dealing with the sometimes dopey media

Fighting in front of 55,000 fans, a huge pay-per-view audience and increased media attention has to be great for the fighters at UFC 129. There is a downside. With all the interest, Jake Shields and Georges St-Pierre say the media crush has been unbelievable.

"It's always a distraction. For sure, I'm not gonna lie, the worst part is this," St-Pierre said. "Sometimes you have to wake up very early in the morning. It's bad because it messes up your sleep time."

Shields wants to be a company man, but when you body is on west coast time, it makes it even tougher to fulfill your duties.

"I think they have me doing the same amount [of interviews as St-Pierre], which I'm not really used to," Shields said (0:15 mark). "I looked at my schedule up there and they have me getting up at seven in the morning for interviews, which is four o'clock in the morning my time.It seems kind of ridiculous to me. I don't know."

The former Strikeforce middleweight champ will do what he's told. He's a quality dude. Watch him act like a pro as this crazy, smiling wacko is all over him.

Before you mock too hard, John D. Villareal is a pretty accomplished athlete. He's just a little too Tony Little-like.

GSP said he understands that the media requests are part of the business and those increase even more when you're a champion. He also knows it's how fans get their fill of the sport.

Strikeforce: Shinya Aoki Easily Submits Lyle Beerbohm

by Michael David SmithShinya Aoki is one of the greatest submission specialists in mixed martial arts, so it was no surprise that Lyle Beerbohm was no match for him at Saturday night's Strikeforce event.

But it was a bit of a surprise just how easy Aoki made it: The whole fight lasted just a minute and a half, and Beerbohm all but invited Aoki to submit him with an odd game plan: Beerbohm charged forward and pressed Aoki against the fence in the opening seconds of the first round, a clear mistake that put Aoki in his wheelhouse when they fell to the ground.

Judge Chuck Wolfe Defends 30-27 Score for Joe Warren

by Michael David SmithBellator featherweight champion Joe Warren won a controversial unanimous decision over Marcos Galvao on Saturday night in Yuma, Arizona, with all three judges seeing the fight differently than nearly every member of the MMA media saw it.

Particularly surprising about the decision was that judge Chuck Wolfe scored the bout 30-27 for Warren: Not only did Wolfe score the first and third rounds for Warren, as did his fellow judges, but Wolfe also gave Warren the second round, even though almost everyone else watching thought that round was decidedly Galvao's.

Although Wolfe declined to go into a detailed blow-by-blow account of the second round, he defended his scorecard and his decision, saying on Tuesday morning that he thought all three rounds in the fight were close, and that in close rounds, something relatively minor can be the difference in a 10-9 score.

Riki Fukuda vs. Rafael Natal reportedly on tap for UFC 133 in August

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_882.jpg
A middleweight bout between Riki Fukuda and Rafael Natal is coming to UFC 133 in August, according to a report from MMAFighting.com.

Fukuda, the former DEEP Middleweight Champion in Japan, made his UFC debut in February in Australia at UFC 127. Taking on The Ultimate Fighter 11's Nick Ring, Fukuda looked to have done enough in the fight to earn a decision victory, but the judges saw the fight for Ring, snapping a seven fight win streak.

Natal's UFC career hasn't gotten off to a great start. After a decision loss to Rich Attonito in his UFC debut last September, Natal went to a draw with Jesse Bongfeldt in his last fight at UFC 124 in December. Of his 12 career victories, Natal has finished all but two of them, and will look to get his first win since a knockout of Travis Lutter last May.

UFC 133 is expected to take place in Philadelphia this August, though the date and location has not yet been revealed.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This should be a good matchup for the card. Fukuda got screwed out of a decision against Ring. He won that fight and it was not a good decision on the part of the judges in Australia. That said, he'll have a good chance to erase the memory of that fight with a good performance here, though Natal will surely be doing everything in his power to win this fight, as a loss may lead to his release being winless in three fights. But it should make for a good matchup in August.

Video analysis: Iole sets the record straight on MMA vs. boxing salaries

With each passing day, MMA is getting closer to the interest shown towards mainstream sports. With that comes more transparency and a deeper look at everything that concerns fighters including their salaries. It was week reported last week by ESPN the Magazine that Brock Lesnar was the highest earner in 2010 at $5.3 million. If that's the true figure, it seemed a bit short of Manny Pacquiao's $32 million. Those are the top dogs, but what does that mean for boxers and MMA stars in the two-through-30 range?

This money talk in MMA even prompted HDNet's Inside MMA to get into the issue a few weeks ago about Nick Diaz. The suggestion was made that Diaz needed to leave MMA to get the money he deserves. Kenny Rice said Diaz might make as much in one boxing match as he's made in 16 of his 32 MMA fights combined (1:08 mark).

That was odd assertion considering Diaz just made $325,000 in his last two fights. Is that fair for a guy who's roughly the 15th biggest star in MMA?

Yahoo!'s MMA/boxing expert Kevin Iole checked in with us to explain how there's no middle class in boxing and that it's highly unlikely Diaz would fetch anything close to 175k for a boxing match.

Nick Diaz Beats Paul Daley in Wild Strikeforce Brawl

by Michael David SmithNick Diaz defended his welterweight title against Paul Daley. In one of the best one-round fights in the history of mixed martial arts, Nick Diaz and Paul Daley pummeled each other for just under five minutes of back-and-forth action, with Diaz surviving multiple hard shots from Daley and eventually rocked Daley himself and finished Daley off by technical knockout with only three seconds remaining in the first round.

It was a great main event, and Diaz retained his Strikeforce welterweight title with his 10th consecutive victory.

The fight was an absolute thriller, and one that showed once again just how tough Diaz is: Daley is an incredibly powerful puncher, but Diaz took the best Daley had and answered every time.

UFC announces "Super 7" presentation for Friday in Toronto with all seven UFC Champions together for the first time

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Fans in Toronto this week for UFC 129 will have an opportunity to take part in a historic gathering of UFC Champions on Friday, as for the first time ever all seven UFC Champions will appear together in a special "Super 7" presentation at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto.

The gathering will precede the weigh-ins for UFC 129, which will take place immediately following the presentation. Both events will be streamed on UFC.com.

According to the UFC's release on Tuesday, "UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz, Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar, Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre, Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez will take part in a media photo opportunity and participate in a special presentation on stage."

"We wanted to give fans a truly once-in-a-lifetime chance to see all seven UFC champions gathered together and we couldn?t think of a better place to do it than in Toronto," UFC President Dana White said. Lightweights Edson Barboza and Ross Pearson to meet in Brazil at UFC 134 this August

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_889.jpg
The UFC's long-awaited return to Brazil continues to fill up, and the UFC on Tuesday announced that Ultimate Fighter season nine winner Ross Pearson will meet Rio de Janeiro native Edson Barboza on the card in a lightweight contest.

The hard-hitting Barboza moved his perfect record to 8-0 in his second appearance in the Octagon last month, as he defeated WEC-import Anthony Njokuani by decision at UFC 128 in that event's "Fight of the Night." That win was a follow-up to his successful debut last November, where he destroyed Mike Lullo's legs with kicks, leading to the stoppage in the third round.

Pearson bounced back from the first loss of his UFC career when he defeated Spencer Fisher by decision in February in Australia. The TUF 9 winner had won his first three fights in the UFC before being submitted by Cole Miller last September, but the win over the longtime UFC vet Fisher has him back on track.

UFC 134 takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27, headlined by the Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.

Penick's Analysis: This card is beginning to fill up nicely, and the UFC will continue putting a Brazilian in each fight for the home country crowd. This fight is a really good one in the lightweight division between two very good strikers who are sure to bring a very entertaining fight for the card. It will be Pearson's boxing against Barboza's kicks and overall striking game, and that makes for a very interesting fight overall.

HYDEN BLOG: Randy Couture Retiring and the Era of Georges St. Pierre

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch contributor

Staff08Hyden_Main_47.jpg
Randy Couture recently announced that his UFC 129 fight against Lyoto Machida would be his final fight. That's cool if that's what he wants. However, there's no need for Randy to make this his final fight. It's not as though he looks impotent in the cage, and there doesn't seem to be a real danger when he fights.

I think as long as Randy realizes that he's not the fighter he used to be, he can fight as long as he wants. He just has to scale back his competition. I actually think that's the main reason why Randy has decided to retire, he knows that he can't compete at the level he used to be able to. I'm sure movie roles and other aspects of life factored into his decision, but elite athletes don't like having lost a step. These guys are used to competing at a high level and when they can't reach that level anymore, they lose interest. It's only natural that time would eventually catch up to Randy, though he can be damn proud of how long he was able to turn back the clock. It's time for the next chapter in his life. Randy has earned all the respect he's been given, and then some.

*************

I've made no secret of how I think the fight between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields for the UFC Welterweight title at UFC 129 will go down. I just don't think that Shields has the tools needed to defeat GSP. It's not that I don't think Shields is a good fighter, it's just that I consider GSP to be one of the greatest fighters of all-time. Even in 20 years, GSP will still be in the top 3 greatest fighters of all-time. That's saying something considering how quickly the sport of MMA is evolving. Athletes keep getting better over time. Even an average NFL team today could beat most every great NFL team from the 70's. It's why you can't compare eras, it's not right. Athletes today are bigger, faster, and stronger than they've ever been. Breakthroughs in science and technology allow athletes to do things never thought possible before.

MMA has come a long way. Compare fighters from even 10 years ago to fighters from today, and you'll see a huge difference. Even taking that into account, though, I still believe that GSP will stand the test of time. There are certain athletes that can be taken from their era and put into a different one, and still enjoy the success they had during their era. Maybe not as much success, but certainly enough to still be considered a great. I consider Bill Russell to be the greatest basketball player of all-time. Some would argue that Michael Jordan was better, but that's an argument for another place and time. I believe you could take Russell and put him into today's NBA, or any other era in NBA history, and he would still be one of the greatest players in the league. What made him great in his era would make him great in any era. Bill Russell stands the test of time.

I believe the same is true of GSP. What makes GSP a great fighter today would make him a great fighter in any era. GSP stands the test of time. I would also put Anderson Silva in the same category as GSP.

When I say that I don't give Jake Shields much of a chance against GSP, I don't mean that as an insult to Shields. I think he'll join a long list of guys who didn't, and don't, have much of a chance against GSP. I could run through the list of guys who fought GSP and got dominated. I could mention Josh Koscheck (twice), Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn, Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra; they've all lost to GSP in dominating fashion. That doesn't make them bad fighters, instead it simply strengthens the case for GSP being an all-time great.

The guys I mentioned are really good fighters. They didn't lie down and let GSP beat them. They fought him as hard as they could, but it wasn't enough. I think the same will be true for Jake Shields, he's a really good fighter, but I don't think he can beat GSP.

In any other era, the UFC Welterweight Title would be one of the most hotly-contested titles in history. The division is stacked with really good fighters, and the belt could easily change hands every time it was fought for. However, this isn't any era, this is GSP's era. He stands head and shoulders above everyone else. Every time he fights, GSP just adds to his legend. Nothing against Jake Shields, but he's just going to be another Wikipedia entry under guys GSP has dominated. There's no shame in that, and he'll join a long list of fighters in that entry. But as long as GSP is around, it seems as though everyone else will be competing for second place.

The ‘Pitbulls’ offer another awesome finish at Bellator 41

In a highlight that should bring a smile to some fans' faces, Patricio "Pitbull" Freire scored another devastating finish for the "Pitbull" Brothers. See, the UFC doesn't have every good fighter in the world under contract ... yet. The smaller of the two dynamos, took out a high level featherweight in Wilson Reis. "Pitbull" dominated most of the fight. Reis, a top level grappler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had trouble getting Freire to the ground, and eventually wore down on the feet as "Pitbull" scored the finish at 3:29 of the final round.

Freire (16-1) advances to Bellator Season 4 featherweight final where he'll face Daniel Straus. That won't be an easy fight. Straus is a monster at 145 pounds and very good grappler. He dominated Kenny Foster, finishing with a third round guillotine choke in the other semifinal on Saturday. The win was particularly impressive for the massive Straus since the fight began with Arizona afternoon temperatures around 99 degrees.

Patricio's older brother Patricky, 25, reached the Bellator Season 4 lightweight final where he'll face Lloyd Woodard.

Joe Warren was successful in a non-title fight, but barely against Marcus Galvao. Warren, a bantamweight by trade, holds the Bellator featherweight title as well. By the looks of Straus and the Patricio "Pitbull," he'll be hard pressed to exit 2011 with that Bellator 145-pound strap. Warren and "Pitbull" met in the Season 3 final, where the American posted an amazing comeback victory after getting torn up in the first round. It looks like "Pitbull" has shored up any weakness that he had with his takedown defense.

The "Pitbulls" are on the verge of stardom. The MMA blogger for the Daily Mirror in the U.K. says they have a chance to be the next Nogueira brothers.

Rashad Evans can't catch a break. The former UFC light heavyweight champ turned to the only option he thought he had by agreeing to fight teammate Jon Jones for the title. Now Jones is out with an injury and the UFC has slotted in Phil Davis.

The Canadian Press' Neil Davidson first reported the change.

The verbal sparring on the Internet, through blog and radio interviews, was getting pretty intense between Jones and Evans. Evans called Jones childish at one point. Jones later responded by suggesting he dominated the veteran at times during training camps.

For Evans, this is a huge blow. He loses another immediate shot at the title and gets a tough bout in Davis. The former Penn State has only fought six times with the promotion and a win over Evans could launch him into the title chase. Evans has everything to lose in this fight rumored to be going down at UFC 133 in Philadelphia.

Evans also has to deal with the awkward scenario of possibly rejoining his team in Albuquerque. He decided to leave Jackson's Submission Fighting and allow Jones to work with the team there. Now that it's Davis on the docket, will he return?

John Morgan from MMAjunkie reports that Jones is still recovering from a right hand ligament injury he suffered during his win over Rua and that he faces a "long recovery."

UFC 129 officiating: Iole talks Ontario commission and reveals the refs

MMA's in its infant stages in Ontario, but the Canadian province won't have the chance to grow slowly and work out any issues below the radar. After debuting the sport with events that drew around 5,000 last month, this weekend Toronto hosts a UFC event with 55,000 in attendance and the MMA world watching. Will everything be up to snuff with the officiating inside and out of the Octagon?

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to talk about the referees assigned to the event and how the ringside officials will handle different situations during the card.

Check out what happened during the MFC 29 fight in Ontario between Marcus Davis and Curtis DeMarce. There was a little confusion about getting doctors into the cage during round three. You'll also see fighters being allowed to use towels and wipe their own faces (9:05 mark). That's a no-no. It also took roughly 35 seconds for doctors to get into the cage and then 1:53 for the fight to restart.

After speaking to Marc Ratner, the UFC's Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, Iole sounded confident that all the kinks have been worked out.

The key to things running smoothly revolves primarily around the referees judges. Ontario has gone above and beyond to bring in some of the best refs MMA has to offer. John McCarthy, Herb Dean, Dan Miragliotta and Yves Lavigne will work the event.

Anderson Silva documentary video: Misunderstood or has he mismanaged his brand?

The main event is set for the UFC's August stop in Brazil. The middleweight champ Anderson Silva will face Yushin Okami.

If the first thought that pops into your head is, "this could be trouble," you're not wrong based on historical data.

Okami, a grappler, may have trouble getting his hands on the champ. On several occasions like that in the past, Silva has clown, danced and made a mockery of the fight when his opponent (Demian Maia, Patrick Cote) was unwilling to engage a striking war. Why does he do that?

A new documentary featuring Silva, "Like Water," may give us an explanation. It's set to debut at the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival at different theatres around New York on Apr. 21, 23, 28 and 30.

The preview (NSFW) focuses an awful lot on Silva's performance issues in the past, but the overall piece sounds like an effort to show us the true Silva.

From TribecaFilm.com:

[...] From Silva's life in Brazil with his wife, three sons, and two daughters, to training with his team in Los Angeles and Miami, first-time filmmaker Pablo Croce peels back the layers of an ultimate fighter to reveal the heart of a champion.

A man of few words, Silva does not shamelessly play into the media hype machine?although he is continuously taunted by opponents who do. [...] Croce's hard-hitting documentary exposes the unseen side of Ultimate Fighting and culminates in one heart-pounding fight that signifies more than just another championship.

Croce says the name of the documentary was inspired by a Bruce Lee philosophy:

"Water has the adaptive abilities, but also the power to crush."

Croce, a first-time filmmaker, wasn't familiar with the world of MMA and started with a fresh slate:

"There is a huge contrast in what I got personally from this man?not what I know from the media or his job as a fighter?but the first few weeks, when I saw there's a great character here; a guy who is very open and friendly?there's a whole stereotype how media casts fighters. I think there's a really good look at the pressures behind the man who prepares for such a big event, a fight. There's a good look at what can be driving his persona, to be perceived somehow differently or stereotyped."

It should be noted Ed Soares, Silva's manager, is listed on the project as an executive producer.

Rich Franklin vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira headed to UFC 133 in Philadelphia in August

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FranklinRich_150CG_30.jpg
Light heavyweights Rich Franklin and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will meet this August, as the UFC announced on Friday that the two are slated to meet at UFC 133.

The event is expected to take place from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Penn., on August 6, though the venue has not yet been officially announced.

Both fighters will be looking to rebound from losses suffered early in 2011 when they clash on this card. Franklin was defeated by Forrest Griffin at UFC 126 in February in his first fight since knocking out Chuck Liddell at UFC 115, while Nogueira lost his second straight decision when Phil Davis bested him in a close decision at Fight Night 24 in March.

Penick's Analysis: This is a very good fight for both fighters after their tough losses this year. Nogueira did a good job of stifling Davis' offense early in the fight, but Davis found a way to take him down a number of times in the second and third rounds to earn the decision. Franklin simply ran into a bigger and stronger fighter in Griffin in February. Both fighters were returning from lengthy injury layoffs, but Griffin's size and grappling ability were the difference in that one. Nogueira needs a win desperately after losing two very close fights, but Franklin will be a very tough opponent. At least for Nogueira he won't be facing another wrestler in a row, and it should leave to a different style of fight than he's been in through his last three fights.

Carlos Condit vs. Dong Hyun Kim Set for UFC 132

by Michael David SmithThe rapidly growing official fight card for UFC 132 has added a welterweight bout with major title implications.

Carlos Condit and Dong Hyun Kim will meet inside the Octagon at UFC 132, the promotion announced Friday. The fight has been added to a card that includes a main event of Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber and undercard fights including Wanderlei Silva vs. Chris Leben and Tito Ortiz vs. Ryan Bader.

Although most people probably don't think of Condit or Kim as one win away from a title shot, this fight could determine the next No. 1 contender in the welterweight division. If Georges St. Pierre beats Jake Shields later this month, and if he doesn't want to move up to middleweight to fight Anderson Silva after that, the UFC will be desperately seeking new challengers for St. Pierre's belt.

Is the UFC making a mistake honoring legendary Gracies by letting them fight?

The mixed martial arts world is fired up for the UFC to hit Brazil. The sport, built upon the backs of great Brazilian fighters like Royce Gracie, is still on the fringe in his homeland. The UFC has a chance to make it mainstream.

Once the Olympics announced it would hold the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, the UFC decided it was time to make a push in Brazil. Rumors began swirling immediately that Gracie would fight on the card.

He was the champion, in a tournament-style format, back at UFC 1 and UFC 2. Gracie was the smallest fighter in the field. That was 1993 and 1994. He's 44 years old now without a professional fight since 2007. Gracie wants the chance to close his career in the Octagon and it sounds like the UFC is willing to give him the opportunity:

"It would be the perfect place to do my last fight," Gracie told UOL Esportes (via Bloody Elbow). "I never fought in Rio de Janeiro and I couldn't be more psyched. We are negotiating [the fight deal], but we should have it finalized in two weeks. We only had an initial contact and I don't even have an opponent yet, but we should have that finalized soon ... My weight is the same as it was twenty years ago [80kg], I am still training, keeping the blade sharp. I follow a very strict diet. I never drank, never party, Carnival, none of that... I'm ready to fight"

There's also rumors that his cousin Renzo, 43, will fight on the card as well. It may be a feel good moment for a few seconds when they enter the Octagon, but it seems like the UFC could be walking a fine line with this one.

In 2006, Royce was never in his fight against Matt Hughes at UFC 60. Hughes grounded and TKO'd him in just 4:39. Renzo was slightly better against Hughes, losing at UFC 112. But it doesn't appear either should be in there with anything resembling a top 20 welterweight.

UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson was tweeting last night asking fans for their opinion on a Royce fight:

Nelson's "on the juice" mention was a reference to Gracie's positive steroid test following his last fight against Kazushi Sakaraba.

Eliminate Matt Serra from the list of candidates. Serra, a Gracie fighting disciple, isn't going to cross his mentor Renzo to fight a member of the family. The other names are puzzling. Could Royce really be competitive against Dan Hardy or Amir Sadollah?

UFC vets Jens Pulver, Drew McFedries head up Titan Fighting Championships 18 on HDNet on May 27

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

hdnet_logo_8.jpg
UFC veterans Jens Pulver and Drew McFedries will head up the next Titan Fighting Championships event on HDNet on May 27, the organization announced today.

"Our first two events on HDNet were met with both praise from critics and fans alike. Titan Fighting 18 will be a continuation of our formula for Titan Fighting 16 and 17 with a mix of nationally recognized names and rising prospects," said Titan Fighting CEO Joe Kelly. "Pulver and McFedries will not be the only national headliners on this show as we are completing negotiations for two other high profile fights. In short, Titan Fighting 18 will be our deepest show in history."

Pulver, the UFC's first ever lightweight champion, is attempting to find some resurgence to his career, coming into the event on a two fight win streak after losing six straight fights and eight out of nine from 2006-2010. He'll meet 10-2 Iowa pro Mike Powell in a featherweight fight on the card, which takes place from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.

"The Kansas City MMA scene has a deep appreciation of former UFC champions. Tim Sylvia was well received when he fought at Memorial Hall in January and Jens is revered by many fight fans in this area so we?re excited to be bringing him into Titan having won his last two fights," Kelly said.

McFedries returned to action at Titan Fighting Championships 16 in January for the first time since being released from the UFC in September of 2009. The near ten year veteran of the sport is 5-5 over his last ten fights. All but one of his nine career victories has come by stoppage. He'll meet 6-2 middleweight Darryl Cobb on the card.

"Drew vs. Darryl is going to be a tremendous standup war," Kelly said. "McFedries has very polished boxing for a mixed martial artist while Darryl's Muay Thai skills are excellent. Both guys know how to bring it in the cage and Memorial Hall will come alive for this fight."

Chael Sonnen still talking about everyone

Chael Sonnen has not had a good 2011. The former UFC middleweight contender was fined $10,000 and given two years probation on a money laundering charge. He was suspended by the UFC. In applying to the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a fight license after he failed a drug test in California, he ticked off Keith Kizer, the head of the NSAC, which puts his chance of getting a license in jeopardy.

Has all this humbled Sonnen? Convinced him to quiet down and quit talking trash? Not a chance. On Monday's MMA Hour on MMA Fighting, he didn't mince words.

"I called them up and said, 'Give me the worst guy you've got under contract,'" he said. "They said, 'Chael, Wanderlei [Silva] won't fight you.' I said, 'Alright. Give me the second worst guy you've got under contract?' They said, 'Chael, how many times do we have to tell you: [Mirko] Cro Cop's a heavyweight.' I said, 'Alright, is there anybody available? How about Bisping? Is his dance card open? And then they said that might be a possibility. So that's where we left off. But that's just not my focus. My focus is making things right with director Kizer."

Ah, there's the Chael we know and tolerate. Ripping people he can't possibly fight because of their fight obligations -- Silva is facing Chris Leben at UFC 132 -- or the fact that they outweigh Sonnen by at least 50 lbs.

Next, he rips light heavyweights for not calling out Jon Jones enough.

"The hot topic that everybody should be talking about is that he's been the champion for three weeks and not one coward at 205 has challenged him. Not one guy has called him out and said, 'I want to fight that guy.' If you're all scared of a 23-year-old kid, turn your gloves in, sign your pink slip and show yourself the door."

That ignores the fact that most of the top light heavyweights have a fight in front of them, or just completed one. Of the MMA Weekly Top 10 205 lbers, three (Machida, Bader and Jackson) have fights in the next three months. Jones and Rua just fought, Dan Henderson isn't in the UFC, Thiago Silva is suspended and Rashad Evans is already slated to fight Jones. That leaves Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, who just lost to Phil Davis, or Forrest Griffin.

Fine, Chael. Why hasn't Griffin called out Jones? Perhaps it's because he knew that Evans was already going to fight Jones and a "call out" would be a waste of breath?

That's just Chael being Chael. But to put the rough start of 2011 behind him, Sonnen might consider how running his mouth got him into trouble with the NSAC. Albert Einstein said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Maybe it's time for a change, Chael.

Horatio Caine takes to the cage on Sunday night

It seems that everyone wants a piece of the MMA pie lately, and that includes the good people at "CSI:Miami," who will run an MMA-themed show on Sunday night. Take a look at the clip, which seems to use every cliche that has ever been uttered around MMA.

The gloves come off? Check. Calling a fighter a weapon? Check. A badly thrown Superman punch? Check. The only cliche they're missing is using a well-known fighter to overact his two lines. Tune in this Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT to CBS to see if we'll catch any more cliches, like a vaguely foreign coach, a gym where someone is jump-roping, or if the sport is called barbaric.

ESPN the Mag story tabs Lesnar as highest paid fighter at $5.3 million in 2010

In the major sports, stories about athletes' salaries generally draw derision and jealous reactions. In the case of mixed martial arts, fans probably have a more supportive stance for the fighters. The combatants aren't making a killing relative to athletes from the NFL, NBA and MLB yet they're putting their safety on the line.

According to ESPN the Magazine, the highest paid MMA fighter in 2010 was Lesnar at ONLY $5.3 million. Boxer Manny Pacquiao led the way in the other major combat sport at $32 million.

On the surface, that makes MMA look pathetic. Should MMA stars like Lesnar, Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva be making $15 million-plus a year? Maybe, but the argument from MMA promoters is that the gap between boxing's haves and have-nots is massive while MMA can boast of dozens of fighters making in excess of $500,000 per year.

The StarPhoenix's Dave Deibert points out that Lesnar is actually a bigger draw than 99.9 percent of the fighters in the modern history of combat sports:

Lesnar has recently become the biggest pay-per-view draw in the world. In 2010, he joined Mike Tyson as the only athletes to twice draw more than one million buys on pay-per-view in a single year ? Tyson did it three times in 1996.

Faber starting Cruz smack talk videos early

Urijah Faber is not a fan of the UFC bantamweight champ, Dominick Cruz, so it's helpful that they are fighting on July 2 at UFC 132. Unfortunately, that's more than two months away, so they have to express their animosity in some way, like YouTube videos.

The pair last fought in 2007 at featherweight. Faber won with a first-round submission, but has expressed his dislike for the "not-that-cool" Cruz many times. If it's like this months out from the fight, it's going to be a fun ride to UFC 132.

Randy Couture reiterates even with a win at UFC 129, he’s doing it his way and retiring

Randy Couture would make Frank Sinatra, and just about every other former fighter proud. The 47-year-old MMA legend wants to go out "his way" and not on terms set by anyone else. Tuesday during the UFC 129 prefight teleconference, he repeated his claim that he's done, following his fight versus Lyoto Machida.

"It's been an ongoing transition for me," Couture told the media. "I kind of want to go out on my own terms and decide when enough is enough. I think that time has come."

Couture said fighting a top contender like Machida at a mega-event in front of 55,000 fans in Toronto is a great way to end things. It'll also be his 30th pro fight in MMA.

"I think it's time to focus on the other things going on in my life after this fight," Couture said. "And I've pushed it pretty far. I don't think anybody is going to push it as far as I have the last 14 years."

Even if he wanted to change his mind, Couture's schedule sounds like it's booked through the fall of 2011. He begins filming a new movie "Hijacked" in late May and then it's back with Sylvester Stallone for the "Expendables II" in September.

Couture has no plans of filing some sort of official retirement papers, but indicated he won't be talked back into the cage after this one.

"I'm sure that they're probably gonna have ideas for other fights. They're gonna try and entice me into coming back and fighting again. And I anticipate all those decisions. I see myself hopefully being with Zuffa and getting involved with them in some other way, shape or form."

Couture said he's healthy now and doesn't want doctors telling him he can't fight any longer.

He sounds interested in becoming part of the UFC's broadcast team down the road. With the number of events UFC/Strikeforce is going to be putting on around the world, that's a great idea. Couture's transition to the booth may not be the best news for some of the current announcers employed by Zuffa and Showtime.
